Blackjack Strategy Tips

Blackjack Strategy Tips
Like we’ve stressed time and time again, those who have a good understanding of blackjack strategy can lower the house edge immensely. In land-based blackjack, you’re normally looking at a 0.6% casino edge when perfect strategy is used. Online blackjack is even better since you can drop the house advantage to around 0.4% if the rules permit.
As if lowering the house edge isn’t enough, another plus to this matter is that it’s not overly-difficult to learn blackjack strategy. All you really need to do is grab a blackjack strategy chart, which shows every correct move based on your hand and the dealer’s upcard. Considering this, it would seem obvious that players should learn strategy so that they’ve got a better chance at making profits.
However, the truth is that there are plenty of players who don’t take the time to study blackjack tips. Now the biggest reason why is that some people are just starting to play online blackjack and aren’t fully aware of strategy. But being new to the game isn’t the only reason for not studying blackjack more in-depth. This being said, here are a few other thoughts on why people don’t go over strategy before playing.

Putting Too Much Stock in Luck

As with all casino games, there is a fair amount of luck involved with blackjack. Sure long-term results indicate that the house will come out slightly on top; however, anything can happen in the short-term. And it’s for this very reason that some players think the majority of blackjack results are based on luck.
Due to this belief, these same people don’t bother with looking at tips because they think it won’t make much of a difference. Instead, they’re content to make “logical” moves and let Lady Luck do the rest. But just because there’s a lot of short-term variance in online blackjack doesn’t mean you should ignore strategy. After all, consistently making correct plays gives you a better chance to swing “luck” in your favor.

Taking a Casual Approach

Another big reason why players don’t spend much time with blackjack strategy is because they aren’t overly-serious about the game. For example, some players might just play online blackjack for a little bit to get a few thrills. Others might sit down at a land-based table solely because their friends are playing too.
Seeing as how not everybody aspires to be a millionaire card counter, it’s understandable if they just want to enjoy the game without worrying about making correct moves. But if this is the case, these same people might be better off sticking with less strategic online casino games such as slots, roulette and/or keno.

Being a Know-It-All

Basic blackjack strategy was mapped out decades ago by various intelligent mathematicians. But even with this being said, some people trust their instincts over tried-and-true methods when they play.
For example, a player might adopt the old ‘mimic the dealer’ strategy where they always hit until a hard (or soft) 17 just like casino rules state. The assumption here is that following the same rules as dealers will put one on an equal playing field with the house. However, dealers gain their advantage by acting after all of the other players; so you’ll actually be facing a huge 7.8% house edge here.
There are plenty of other thoughts and beliefs that misguided players stick with like always splitting 10’s, not splitting 8’s and taking insurance. But if you actually want a decent chance to win some money, it’s better to study basic blackjack strategy rather than making up your own beliefs about the game.

Just Plain Lazy

One other category of player that we’d like to discuss here is somebody who just doesn’t feel like looking at blackjack tips. Unlike the previously described players, this type knows that strategy can help their overall profits – yet they still choose not to look anything over.
Unfortunately, there’s no quick fix for somebody who doesn’t want to learn. But looking at examples of how much money could be saved over the long-run with proper strategy might help. For example, if you made 1,000 blackjack bets at $5 a piece with a 2.0% house edge present, you’d theoretically lose $100. However, if you did the same thing with a 0.5% casino edge present, you would only drop $25. So it’s obviously a better idea to take the 15-20 minutes to review tips rather than just doing whatever you feel like.
As you can see, there are several kinds of blackjack players who don’t study as much strategy as they should. And while these people may all have their reasons for not doing so, it’s pretty obvious that you’ll benefit far more from utilizing blackjack strategy while playing.
